NIHR South East Midlands Diabetes Research Network (SEM DRN)

We are hosted by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and sit within the Leicester Diabetes Centre at the Leicester General Hospital. Over the years the SEM DRN has proudly remained one of the best performing local diabetes research network and, for the period of 2011-12, we recruited over 5,600 research participants. We pride ourselves in having excellent relationships with all our sites across the patch, which is strongly reflected in our recruitment figures and both academic and commercial collaborations we share.  
 

 

The South East Midlands Diabetes Research Network is one the best performing local Diabetes Networks across the UK. The Diabetes Network is one of only 8 Topic Specific Networks funded by the National Institute for Health Research and is part of the NIHR’s family of Clinical Research Networks.

The South East Midlands DRN provides the infrastructure to support diabetes research across a large geographical patch from Birmingham in the west, to Lincolnshire in the east, and from Leicester and Rutland in the south, to Sheffield and South Yorkshire in the north.

 

Aims
 

The Network’s goal is to support industry, researchers and academics to develop diabetes research of the highest quality to benefit the local population, and to inform national policy and service development. The aim of the NIHR CRN is to provide the infrastructure to support clinical research within the NHS in England and comprises of:

 

  • A co-ordinating centre based at Leeds
  • 6 topic specific networks- of which diabetes is one, established by the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN) and Department of Health. to support the delivery and conduct of clinical diabetes research
  • A primary care research network
  • A comprehensive research network
