Insulin Management Groups (UHL)
UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF LEICESTER NHS TRUST (UHL)
Insulin management groups are a service offered to people in Leicester with diabetes who are on insulin treatment.

They are educational and informative covering aspects of looking after your diabetes with insulin therapy.

WHAT ARE THEY AND WHO ARE THEY FOR?

  • For patients who need education on dose adjustment whether you have type1 or 2 diabetes.

You may be on insulin once, twice or more times of the day. Your insulin may be a mixture of quick and longer acting insulin or it may be that you give these separately. The adjustment will need to be done with the knowledge of which insulin acts when and the amount you may need to increase or decrease your insulin. Read more on insulin

This kind of knowledge will enable you to adjust your insulin and to have better control overall. The group will share their experiences in a relaxed atmosphere.

    WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT GROUPS?

  • People who have already been to these groups have enjoyed speaking to and working with other people with diabetes.
  • Sharing your experiences with other’s can help you to feel that you are not the only one who has difficulties sometimes.
  • Working with a group means that you can learn how other’s cope with similar issues.

    WHAT’S INVOLVED?

The group is run by a diabetes specialist nurse (DSN) and a diabetes specialist Dietitian (from UHL)

  • We aim to have no more than 8 people per group

  • We will have a number of things to cover but we also invite participants to contribute any issues that they would like to discuss to our agenda.

  • We aim to have a friendly and informal atmosphere, which is strictly confidential.

  • We use a combination of discussion, practical work e.g. looking at food models and labels and providing information.

  • You will not be made to speak in front of the group if you do not wish to!
  • Please join us and don’t be afraid to ask questions
  • Each session is for 3 hours
