DEPARTMENT OF DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY

ABOUT US

Within the University Hospitals of Leicester (UHL), there are three Hospitals, The Leicester Royal Infirmary (LRI), The Leicester General Hospital (LGH) and The Glenfield Hospital (GH). UHL works in partnership with local Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) across Leicestershire and Rutland. OUR OBJECTIVE

The team aims to provide a wide range of services for people with diabetes of all ages and their carers, as well as provide training, resources and support for multi-disciplinary staff across primary and secondary care in caring for people with diabetes.

THE DIABETES TEAM: WHAT WE DO

The Multidisciplinary team works across all three Hospital sites and in the community. The overall responsibility for the department lies with the Head of Service and Service Manager. See ourDiabetes Team

The diabetes team provide:
  • Acute inpatient care

  • A comprehensive service is offered to patients in our dedicated diabetic clinics including retinopathy screening

  • Outpatient service to include a dedicated diabetic foot clinic, adolescent clinic, young adults and children’s clinics, pump therapy clinics, ante-natal diabetes & endocrinology clinics

  • Close links with specialist clinics such as childrens, maternity and kidney services

  • Diabetes education groups, insulin initiation groups, individual nurse led clinics, diabetes dietitians, specialist diabetes education programmes, DESMOND, DAFNE

  • Endocrinology services

  • We also run community based Clinics and support Primary Care in the management of people with diabetes. There are currently three Diabetes Specialist Nurses (DSN’s) employed by Leicestershire County & Rutland Primary Care Trust (PCT) and two full time equivalent Diabetes Specialist Nurses employed by Leicester City PCT, one full time equivalent DSN at Spinney Hill Medical Practice.

  • The diabetes team also has an excellent research arm and undertakes clinical research in all areas of diabetes led by Professor Melanie Davies and host South East Midlands Diabetes Research Network.
