HORMONE PROBLEMS OR ENDOCRINE DISORDERS

Hormones are chemicals produced by the body which circulate in the blood stream and spread around the body to carry messages or signals to different parts of the body.

Here in Leicester we have a dedicated Endocrinology Service based at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

In this section you find information about the hormone diseases and the Endocrinology Department.

  • The Pituitary Gland: What it is and its function in maintaining the normal functioning of the body. It describes the different types of pituitary disorders that can occur including:
  • Acromegaly: Over activity of the pituitary gland producing too much growth hormone.
  • Prolactinoma & Hyperprolactinaemia:Over activity of the pituitary gland producing to much of the hormone prolactin affects women.
  • Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Affects women describes what it is how it occurs and its symptoms.
  • Thyrotoxicosis: Describes the disorders of the thyroid gland and its symptoms including its importance in maintaining metabolism
  • Hormone Replacement Therapy: What it is and why it is required for some people.
  • Adrenal Steroid Hormones: Describes what they are and its symptoms and its importance in responding to stress and illness.
